- BREVE - Hayden Chisholm

Breve is the name of the new PIROUET release. It’s also the name of the band, and presents Hayden Chisholm in a trio with colleagues that he has known and valued for some time. Together they play an intimate, airy music that envelopes an inner tension and embraces the listener in a shimmering, absorbing calm. Born in 1975 near Auckland, New Zealand, the cosmopolitan saxophonist has put out his musical feelers in diverse lands. His fellow countryman bassist Matt Penman was born in 1974 in Palmerston North, New Zealand and has called New York City home for the last 20 years. Born in 1942 in Manchester, England, Pianist John Taylor was professor at the music conservatory in Cologne up until 2007. Hayden Chisholm says that, “I’ve known Matt since High school in New Zealand where we both grew up. I met John when he was teaching at the Cologne music school where I studied. I always dreamed of playing with him, and over a decade after we met at the school that dream came true and the trio was born. Our first concert was in England in 2007.” Chisholm emphasizes, “They are both musicians who listen a lot. This may sound like a given, but there are some musicians who really stick out here. They are also both excellent composers and this I think brings a lot more musicality to the table.”

That is especially important in this setting. A group without a drummer is stimulating and challenging at the same time: “I like the space it gives us,” Chisholm explains. “Even though a lot of the music is still rhythmic, the lack of drums means we can work a little more with dynamics and tone coloring.” And that is what the trio concentrates on. The music flows naturally, every note swings; it never sounds ’put on’. ’Musicality’ is the key word.

Hayden Chisholm was selected to be the 2015 “Improviser in Residence” at the “moers festival”. Since its founding in 1972, the world-renowned festival has been a magnet for the electrifying new voices in jazz. As resident artist, Chisholm will work and live for the next year in the city on the Lower Rhine.
